CHAPTER 25
Iâm so excited,â Melissa whispered. âI canât believe that Iâm actually getting married today. I canât wait to see the cake.â
Erin couldnât help being caught up in Melissaâs excitement. As much as she questioned the wisdom of Melissa getting married to someone who was in prison, especially when that someone was Davis Plaint, she couldnât help being happy for her friend. She was doing what she wanted to, ignoring the disapproval of the church ladies. Pursuing her own bliss despite what anyone else might think. Erin hoped that she could be that strong in going after the things that she wanted. She was often critical of herself for being tentative and not speaking up for herself.
That was what came of growing up in foster homes where she was constantly told to keep quiet and not make waves. She hadnât stopped making waves, but she had stopped being vocal about it, finding other ways to go about getting what she wanted.
Erin unlocked and opened the side door to the hall and let Melissa enter ahead of her.
Melissa had obviously been to other events in the hall and knew the layout of the building and where the sometimes difficult-to-find light switches were. She moved ahead of Erin confidently, one hand stretched out to touch the wall as she moved down to the end where the bank of switches was. Erin trailed along a distance behind her, not wanting to trip over any chairs or decorations that had been set up since she had been there to assemble the cake.
The lights went on. Erin squinted and held her hand over her eyes at the sudden onslaught of light. Melissa shrieked.
It didnât sound like the happy shriek of a woman who had just seen her wedding cake for the first time.
Erin rubbed her eyes and forced them open.
It was immediately obvious why Melissa was upset. Someone had been there since Erin had left. A number of the tables and chairs had been broken or thrown to the floor. The little arbor that the decorator had been setting up when Erin had left was a pile of kindling and leaves. Who had been rampaging through the hall? Why would anyone want to destroy Melissaâs wedding reception preparations? It didnât make any sense.
Erin looked over at Melissa, looking for some comforting words to impart. There was still plenty of time to get everything cleaned up and arranged again. They might have to forego the arbor, but ribbons and flower arrangements and other decorations were still intact. They could pull it off. No one would be any the wiser.
Melissa was staring, not at the chairs and the broken arbor, but at something Erin couldnât see, because Melissa was standing in the way. Erin took a few steps to get to her side and her eyes were drawn to the horror that Melissa had seen first and which still held her bound.
It was the wedding cake.
Erin had given herself enough time to make, decorate, and assemble the cake.
